QR code (short for Quick Response code) is a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) originally designed for the automotive industry.

QR code has become popular relatively recently due to its fast readability and the possibility of large data storage.

The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. Encoded information can consist of any data (eg binary, alphanumeric, etc.).

QR codes can be read by any mobile phone with a camera and internet access that has an application installed for reading QR codes. Some devices have these applications already installed at the factory, and for others there is a large selection of free applications that can be downloaded from the Internet.

The QR code has been an ISO standard since 2000, and the currently valid version is ISO/IEC 18004:2015 Information – Automatic identification and data capture techniques – QR Code barcode symbology specification.
