The European Interoperability Framework (EIF), which puts greater emphasis on the practical implementation of interoperability principles and models, as well as new policy and technology needs, was adopted on 23 March 2017. The framework provides guidance on how to set up interoperable digital public services.

In November 2022, the Commission adopted a proposal for an Interoperability Europe Act and its accompanying communication to strengthen cross-border interoperability and public sector cooperation across the EU.
