HTML is an abbreviation for HyperText Markup Language, which means presentation language for creating web pages. A hypertext document is created using the HTML language. The HTML language is used to shape the content and create the hyperlinks of the hypertext document.

The display of the hypertext document is enabled by a web browser. The basic task of the HTML language is to instruct the web browser how to display a hypertext document. In doing so, we try to make that document look the same regardless of which web browser, computer and operating system it is. Html files are actually plain text files, their extension is .html or .htm. The basic building block of every page are signs (tags) that describe how something will be displayed in a web browser. Links within HTML documents connect the documents in an orderly hierarchical structure and thus determine the way in which the visitor experiences the content of the pages.

CSS is an abbreviation of (eng.) Cascading Style Sheets, i.e. style templates for visual presentation. It is done in style language, which is used to describe the presentation of a document written using the markup (HTML) language. In other words, style defines how to display HTML elements. CSS is used to edit the very appearance and layout of the page.
